Ji Eun Lee recently graduated from the School of Visual Arts in New York and currently works as a graphic designer at Apple. Lee was awarded a Red Dot for two of her brand design projects last year.
Ji Eun Lee in Interview with Red Dot
Red Dot: Your main interests are branding on the one hand and interactive design on the other. How do you combine the two?
Ji Eun Lee: After creating a visual identity for a brand and a system that acts as the basis of the brand, I try to expand this idea into various fields including interactive design by thinking about how people can interact with these design systems in an interesting and creative way in the real world.
How did you come up with the idea of developing a brand design for the imaginary Bacteria Museum?
When I was researching bacteria, I was interested in their reproduction process, so-called binary fission. From a design perspective, the paradox images that this process produces are really interesting. Inspired by the reproduction process with its unique form and vibrant colours, I created an identity system that works with division and reassembly to produce something new. Then, I applied this consistent identity system to other fields of design such as motion and interaction design to make them more interesting and appealing for visitors.
