Modest and Focused – A Space Honouring the Art of Baking

The MAYBELL bakery in Seoul is an institution. When Jung Woong was planning a new store, he wanted to create a space where he could bake bread for the rest of his life. The building and shop designed by U.lab is therefore fully focused on this purpose, and every detail – from room layout, colours and materials to the lighting concept – tells the story of bread baking.
Red Dot about U.lab
The MAYBELL bakery in Seoul primarily sells rye breads, and a suitable retail space for this type of bread should be dark and modest rather than bright and sophisticated.

MAYBELL
A raw, rustic look was chosen for this bakery, with hand-formed and fired ceramic tiles on the facade and hot-rolled steel in the interior. The outer door on the left opens automatically, directing customers past the bread shelves to the counter. The oven is located behind the counter, creating a cosy atmosphere.
