The MacBook Air combines, within the smallest possible space, feather-light design and robustness for everyday use. The netbook measures only 0.3 cm at its thinnest point, 0.7 cm at its thickest, and weighs just 1.6 kg. In designing the notebook as light and flat as possible, engineers dispensed with optical and conventional rotating hard drives. Instead, flash memory is used, exclusively designed for this netbook and 90 per cent smaller than comparable storage. It features all the advantages of flash storage, like faster data access and a higher mechanical resilience in comparison to hard drives. The precision-crafted unibody chassis was machined from one single piece of aluminium; all other component parts were then directly incorporated into the enclosure. This made it possible not only to bring forth a product of unique aesthetic appeal but to arrive at an extremely mobile and robust device. The netbook is operated via the generously dimensioned multi-touch trackpad, the glass surface of which has a comfortable feel, inviting the touch of the user.
