Space-frame technology was originally designed for automobile construction to achieve a vehicle with a very light and stable structure. In essence, this technology consists of stretching plastic material tautly over a magnesium frame. During manufacture, one piece of thin, stable steel is deep drawn and welded together to form an entire chair frame consisting of a seat frame and the connecting leg supports. It is only in the next step, in which a fine-grained polypropylene bowl that serves as both seat and backrest is harmoniously mounted on the frame, that the whole is transformed into a chair. Thus the combination of design and technology in the Chassis chair creates a light-weight construction in a completely new design idiom. The chair appears very technological and precise whilst remaining organic and flowing. Chassis itself is very light, durable and stable. It only weighs 5.4 kg and its smooth lines make it fit into many different environments. The ergonomic, functional and well thought-through design of this chair ensures it is very comfortable.

The creation of a chair is one of the most frequent, but undoubtedly one of the most difficult challenges for a designer. With Chassis from Wilkhahn, designer Stefan Diez has brought into being an outstanding concept. For the first time, a chair has been made using industrial space-frame technology. Thus, Chassis represents a milestone in the long history of the classical chair. The idea brings together technology, design and ecological thinking in one superb product.
