The REfill REuse REpeat Cream Jar
FASTEN’s ‘REfill REuse REpeat’ concept was created to meet a growing need for innovative, sustainable cosmetics jars. The objective of the development was to create as much synergy as possible between the various aspects of sustainability by combining different techniques. The concept consists of three main components: the outer jar, the refill cup and the secondary cardboard packaging for the refill.
The outer jar is made of recycled PP, which can be recycled again after use. Its single wall structure design not only visually shows the consumer which cream refill they are using, but it also reduces the amount of PP material required for the jar. No ink is used for branding, and the logo is embossed. Because the PP cap has a crab-claw closure, there is no need for an additional shive or liner. The cap’s double-wall structure creates a duo-colour effect, which adds to the product’s aesthetic appeal.
The unique ultra-light thermoformed refill cup is an essential component of the design. An empty cup can be clicked out, recycled, and replaced with a refill, allowing the outer jar to be reused again and again. By using in-mould debossing instead of ink and PP for both the cup and the seal, only one material is needed. The recyclable secondary packaging saves material by not using a box and instead constructing a frame. Lastly, adding fast-growing elephant grass to the paper further reduces CO2 emissions, and debossing is used in place of some of the ink for branding.
