From Revolution to Evolution

Apple Watch Ultra introduced a new bold design and a wide range of features built for endurance, exploration, and adventure. That’s why Apple’s engineers selected aerospace-grade titanium as the case material. In addition to being very rugged and corrosion resistant, this metal is surprisingly light in weight. The bright Retina display is well protected behind the flat sapphire front crystal, surrounded by a titanium case with a diameter of 49 mm. Three new bands – the Trail Loop for endurance athletes and runners, Alpine Loop for explorers and Ocean Band for extreme water sports and recreational divers – also demonstrate a dedication to (functional) detail. The choice of both materials and closures reflects the different requirements of each user group and activity. The product developers also focused on extending battery life, which impressed the jurors. “Battery weight and life are key features of a smartwatch, and Apple has leveraged maximum battery capacity in the Apple Watch Ultra. The battery lasts up to 36 hours during regular use, which makes it perfect for features like overnight sleep tracking.” A new low-power setting allows the user to extend battery life even further. On the left side of the housing is a large button – the Action button, as Apple calls it – which can be programmed to do a number of tasks. The Wayfinder watch face that was specially designed for the Ultra’s display size has an integrated compass, and the Digital Crown is larger and features coarser grooves, making it easier to use while wearing gloves. Apple Watch Ultra has three built-in microphones for optimal voice quality. “The first Apple Watch was a revolution,” summed up the jury. “Then, the challenge the designers faced was how to keep taking it forward. Expectations were high, but this model is a successful evolution that doesn’t disappoint.”
