Unfriendly Gift

“Unfriendly Gift” is a series of six picture books disguised as six pretty gifts that reveal hidden suffering. They tell the true stories of little girls and young women who were victims of sexual assault by their fathers, teachers, coaches or colleagues – people whom they once trusted. In order to highlight the tension between apparent care and affection on the one hand and unbearable fear on the other, the visual design uses two very different styles. Mild, warm tones applied with soft brush strokes on the book covers stand in contrast with dark, disharmonious tones in rough brush strokes on the inner pages.
