Spectar - an AR solution for construction
Spectar is a fully-immersive augmented reality Building Information Model (BIM) overlay app for the Microsoft HoloLens geared specifically for the construction industry. Traditionally, 3D BIM models are oversimplified to 2D print-outs that Trade Professionals must interpret and build upon. This creates an information gap and negatively impacts field coordination because information sharing and accessing the most recent designs on the jobsite environment becomes increasingly difficult.
Today, workers use Spectar to access critical data and contextual history in the field throughout the lifetime of a construction project. Spectar’s new Multi-Point Alignment (MPA) solution overcomes communication inefficiencies and information silos by reducing setup time while significantly increasing model accuracy, thereby increasing worker productivity, efficiency and ease of communication.
The Survey and Adhoc Alignment methods were considered during the solution design to ensure MPA is both accessible and simple to deploy in a variety of settings and constraints. The Survey Method, which is optimised for accuracy, allows construction teams to upload their measurements to align with the BIM model. The Adhoc Alignment Method, which is optimised for flexibility, allows construction teams to set up the workspace without any prep steps and with minimal input to achieve correct positioning.
MPA’s key benefits include reduced alignment time, increased trust across teams through the use of shared point data, lower rates of human error, lower model drift due to an increased number
of alignment points, and increased placement accuracy.
