Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2016 – the jury continues to grow
Rinn Kyoto Miyagawasuji Hitotose-Aki-
The design of this hotel highlights the artistry of a Japanese paper artist, featuring persimmon tannin finishes in the kitchen and counter for a dynamic, evolving aesthetic. The living room showcases a distinctive large wall combining Japanese paper and plaster. The two guest rooms on the second floor offer delightful surprises.
In one room, Japanese paper is applied using the ‘fukuro-bari’ technique, with indirect lighting revealing lines of light that embody ‘stillness’ and ‘movement’. Another room features a single tone of Japanese paper on the floor, walls, and ceiling, with willow leaves crafted from ‘koyori’ — Japanese paper pressed by hand. These elements create a unique blend of tradition and hospitality, ensuring guests feel both welcomed and inspired.
