Islander's Summer Homework
Taiwan imposed martial law for 38 years, from 1949 to 1986. People who lived through the martial law era, therefore, associate the sea with danger and restriction. Now, the government is encouraging visits to local coastal areas. To help promote this policy, the designers created a guidebook that introduces people to the beauty of sand from Taiwan’s coasts.
Analysing the locations and compositions of sands in Taiwan resulted in the creation of a sand swatch book and a guidebook. A manual includes the corresponding local sand swatches as well as a map in a bottle. Featuring unique sand paintings, each one is illustrated using sand from a different coast. Sprinkling sand on the sand painting also helps to complete the landscape. When all twelve picture cards are completed, a round- the-island itinerary in Taiwan highlighting the various coastal experiences in Taiwan will be revealed.
