Who can we believe in? Who or what actually shapes our opinion? And can everything really be thought and said? Since freedom of speech and freedom of the press are increasingly threatened in Europe as well, the 2017 annual report of the Baden-Württemberg Stiftung has chosen as its topic the right to freedom of expression, arts and sciences anchored in Article 5 of Germany’s Basic Law. Supported by an “expressive” design featuring a versatile layout and eye-catching illustrations that makes readers want to leaf through it, the report reflects on an important asset of our democracy. The aim is to make readers aware of the importance of freedom of speech, to motivate them to reflect and to challenge their courage to express their own opinions. The intriguing visualisation of the richly detailed content is rounded off by an extensive questionnaire that propels interactivity in that it invites readers to answer the questions individually. Finally, an ABC of the freedom of expression playfully presents key buzz words – ranging from A for “alternative Fakten” (alternative facts) to Z for “Zensur” (Censorship).
