Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2016 – the jury continues to grow
Artificial Intelligence Unit
The AI Hardware team within IBM Research develops next-generation hardware and software to meet the energy and computing demands of the generative AI era. The need for AI computing doubles every 3 to 4 months, and running today’s large deep learning models on either CPUs or GPUs is neither efficient nor sustainable. The Artificial Intelligence Unit (AIU) is a new chip architecture invented specifically for AI workloads.
The field of supercomputing has many constraints, including common practices, technical limitations, and safety regulations. The design team influenced the build of this new AI system at every level, from the chip to the large row of server racks. Creative solutions centred on cooling and power, light, and revealing the technology itself to avoid mystery. Servers and chips are often hidden — living in cold dark boxes in even colder darkened rooms. This showcase AIU cluster is designed to bridge the gap between people and technology.
