Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015 - New category “Jewellery” will be assessed by Wermekes, Cheng and Hermsen
The registration phase of the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015 will end on 11 February. For 60 years now, the annually organised international competition has been awarding products of good design quality. In its anniversary year, one of 31 categories is “Jewellery”. To be up to the product variety, Red Dot invited renowned jewellery experts: Günter Wermekes, Vivian Wai-kwan Cheng and Professor Herman Hermsen are part of the Red Dot jury 2015.
Günter Wermekes is a goldsmith and designer with his own studio. He attracted huge attention in the industry with his jewellery collection “Stainless steel and brilliant”, which he has been presenting at national and international fairs since 1990. The unusual material combination and Wermekes’ consequent minimalistic form language have given important impulses to contemporary jewellery design. Renowned manufacturers like BMW, Rodenstock, Niessing or Tecnolumen, for whom he designed, among others, accessories, glasses, watches and door openers, praise his designs.
Vivian Wai-kwan Cheng started her career as a watch designer and later engaged in design of fashion accessories. She was head of the Product design team at Lambda Industrial Limited and joined the Vocational Training Council teaching product design. She developed the jewellery design course with this design institute, and was later responsible for exploring and developing international link with design related organisations and design schools. In 2014, she founded “Vivian Design” to provide consultancy services in design networking, event management, and promote her own art in jewellery and glass.
Professor Herman Hermsen from the Netherlands taught product design at the Utrecht School of the Arts until 1990, after which time he returned to Arnhem as lecturer at the Academy. Since 1992, Hermsen is professor of product and jewellery design at the University of Applied Sciences in Düsseldorf; he gives guest lectures at universities and colleges throughout Europe, the United States, and Japan, and began regularly organising specialist symposia in 1998. Herman Hermsen has received numerous international awards for his work in product and jewellery design, which are shown worldwide in solo and group exhibitions and held in the collections of renowned museums, such as the Cooper-Hewitt Museum, New York, the Pinakothek der Moderne, Munich, and the Museum of Arts and Crafts, Kyoto.
The three jewellery specialists will assess this year’s submissions in their field of expertise. The entire Red Dot jury consists of around 40 members.
