The Sounds of Taiwanese History
All Forms Of Life
All Forms Of Life is made up of a series of prints that are linked by the theme “all forms of life” (“人生百态”). Every person goes through many stages of life, from birth to old age and death, and during this time, they experience pleasures and sorrows, ups and downs, and a wide range of human emotions. In these screen prints, various states of being and their corresponding abstracted Chinese characters are expressed graphically.
The Chinese character (“人”) for “person”, for example, depicts being trapped in a suit, isolated from the outside world. The character “生”, or “bearing”, is graphically translated as an oppressive weight on the body, lamenting the difficulty of life. “百", or “hundred” is expressed as a calm being who is smoking even while wrapped in a whirlpool. “态”, or “state of being”, sheds tears as she is squeezed by pressure from all sides.
This is life, with the multitude of emotions and expressions that come with living. The entire series of artwork is created by hand screen-printing. The process, like life, can be tedious and repetitive.
