The Sounds of Taiwanese History
This project features three interactive audio installations, each one combining sound structures, 3D modelling, and graphic design to create an immersive experience. The sound effects, produced through collisions, melodies, and frictions, connect to different elements of Taiwanese history.
The first volume, ‘Qing Dynasty’, samples various instruments from that era. The visual design uses imagery of waves and layered rice paddies combined with large geometric shapes in blue and yellow, creating a contrast between the pages.
In the second volume, ‘Japanese Colonial Era’, marbles rolling down wooden scales play the melody of ‘Rainy Night Flowers’, while sliding wood blocks mimic bombers whizzing through the sky. The visual design transforms significant changes into the imagery of roads, with rectangular blocks in shades from light green to deep purple, resembling a darkening and rugged road from a distance.
The third volume, ‘Post-War Taiwan’, uses large gears and stairs to symbolise Taiwanese society’s steady progress. On the first page, morning glories, enduring harsh winters along barren coasts, represent the victims of White Terror. On the second page, the wild lily represents the spirit of the ‘March Movement’ and symbolises the dawn of Taiwan’s new democratic era.
