Red Dot: How has our sense of spaces and environments changed over the past years?
Suh Architects: With the internet and VR, people are now able to "occupy" a space before they actually enter it; they pre-experience a place in videos and myriads of images with their imagination. As nearly the whole world is accessible now, people have a much wider visual vocabulary even if they have never personally visited a space. As designers, we are thus challenged to create fresh solutions for clients who have a broader awareness of what is possible.
You combine different building materials for Genesis Suji …
Genesis Suji is a study in contrasts. For the lobby, rough concrete and weathering Corten steel were chosen for their contrast with Genesis’ sleek, shimmering vehicles. In the same way, the building’s central elevator core is wrapped in gun-metal hot-rolled steel; its customised cabs open to reveal an interior finished in anodised copper. At the same time, we wanted to make visitors feel a tactile warmth throughout the space. Oak ceilings in the entire building thus create a living room feeling.
