The STEYR Hybrid Drivetrain Konzept is a development of possible STEYR Konzept tractors. STEYR Konzept combines a combustion engine, generator and electric motors, all individually controllable, to supply energy on demand where it is needed. It also features radical yet practical styling and ergonomics, with a cab that includes transparent screen technology and head-up displays that project data onto the cab glass. Its goal is to improve fieldwork efficiency, operator comfort, and safety for the driver and other road users. The STEYR Hybrid Drivetrain Konzept supplements the original STEYR Konzept tractor by bringing hybrid electric drive technology closer to reality. It focuses on the powertrain, which transfers power from the engine and motors to the ground, converting energy into traction for performing field tasks. Emphasis is placed on the potential of the electric drive system to propel a lightweight, high-power tractor with significantly reduced fuel consumption — all while enhancing driving experience and performance. The Hybrid Drivetrain Konzept can power tractor attachments via high- voltage sockets, and differential front/ rear ‘torque vectoring’ enables torque to be directed to the front/rear wheels, optimising traction and providing up to 10% more drawbar power. This produces variable and on-demand 4WD, thereby reducing front axle slippage common in conventional tractors working with soil-engaging implements and lowering both fuel consumption and soil damage. Lastly, a unique brake retarder enables a tractor equipped with the STEYR Hybrid Drivetrain Konzept to maintain a constant speed downhill. When combined with STEYR’s S-Brake automatic trailer braking system, the retarder cuts braking requirements even with a heavily loaded trailer. Benefits include reduced brake wear and increased safety. Another design innovation is the use of energy generated by the brake retarder to recharge the super capacitors.
