The jury was impressed by the way the life-saving SBX air-supply system works: “This innovation was developed by professionals to help people buried under masses of snow to continue breathing for up to 90 minutes without the need for a mouthpiece.” The development team took advantage of the fact that avalanche snow consists of at least 50 per cent air. After the SBX has been activated using the T-shaped handle, the system draws in the ambient air and continuously pumps it into the victim’s breathing zone through outlets on the shoulder straps. Due to its special design, the system can only be used with suitable, appropriately certified freeride and avalanche backpacks.
