SARAM – Faceless Suffering of North Koreans
This poster series for the human rights organisation SARAM aims to focus public attention on the daily suffering of the people of North Korea. Since there are no images that could display the systematic oppression of these people to the global audience, the design adopts the familiar aesthetics of staged North Korean propaganda. The faceless figures on the posters signify that people in this system literally have no faces, which means that their suffering and grievances are depersonalised and hidden. With this simple trick, the tacky and beautiful illusory world of propaganda is reversed and exposed.
