Royal Philips is one of the internationally leading companies focused on household appliances and healthcare technology. Founded in Eindhoven in 1891 by Frederik Philips and his son Gerard, the company’s first products were incandescent lamps, among other things, followed by radios, loudspeakers and razors, whose round shaving heads next to the logo became a trademark of Philips. With its own design department founded in 1925, the company became a synonym for good and innovative design. The Dutch company focuses on small consumer medical devices in the personal healthcare sector and on professional medical systems in the sector of healthcare solutions. By integrating both sectors, Philips has set itself the goal of achieving advanced quality integration in healthcare, diagnostics, therapy and not least in home care. Innovation and the commitment to visionary thinking, which are realised through novel design approaches, have always guided and formed the brand essence of Philips to this very day. In addition, the visual appearance of the technology conglomerate builds on its heritage, the Philips logo registered in 1943, which depicts a circle representing the world, four stars as a symbol for the evening sky and waves insinuating radio waves. Having seen several adjustments over the years, the brand saw a thorough repositioning in 2013. Under the brand line “Innovation + you”, the needs of consumers have been placed centre stage. In addition, the logo also underwent a redesign. The plus is illustrated in the form of the well-established stars, while the hitherto filigree contours are now more emphasised. The formerly three waves have been reduced to two thicker waves leading to an overall more pronounced complexity that is aimed at lending the brand appearance a stronger sense of distinction and flexibility. The brand claim “Innovation + you” and the idea behind it can now be experienced in the Customer Experience Centre opened in Eindhoven, where the history of health technology and many possible links between people, data and technology are displayed. Intelligent, customisable and personalised solutions, combined with the Internet of things, sensor technology, cloud solutions and artificial intelligence, aim at presenting the state-of-the-art know-how of Philips. Already in 1998, Philips Design won the honorary title “Red Dot: Design Team of the Year” and, since then, was awarded for good design more than a hundred times at the Red Dot Award.
