Is it possible with the help of design to present complex scientific topics in a way that is easy to understand for everyone – even without previous knowledge – and thus facilitate learning? This animation film sets out to prove that design can support and thus promote a deeper understanding of a topic, and it does so by taking the example and explaining the mechanism of evolution. The film features clear and plain infographics as well as video and audio information to illustrate the subject and its complex interrelations step by step to make them easily comprehensible for laymen. The theory of evolution, which explains how the enormous variety of life could come into existence and how it was possible for primitive life forms to spawn the millions of different creatures that exist today, is illustrated through visualisations kept in a child-like style that is attention-grabbing and easy to grasp. Thus lending the illustrations a high appeal and entertainment value, the information is more likely to sink in playfully. Statement by the jury »The animation film “Mechanisms of Evolution” is convincing as it presents the complex and, in school, often less than inspiringly taught topic of evolution in a simplified manner, paired with a highly humorous design approach. The content was outstandingly well researched and staged with many details that make it not only easy to understand but also fun to watch and learn.«
