EcoShell
ECOSHELL is a sustainable building material designed to address environmental challenges while providing practical and aesthetically pleasing solutions for coastal buildings. This innovative project transforms discarded oyster shells and fish bones into durable exterior tiles, offering a sustainable alternative to traditional building materials. ECOSHELL capitalises on abundant marine waste, as the seafood industry discards millions of tons of oyster shells annually, which pose environmental risks if left untreated in landfills or oceans.
Oyster shells are naturally resistant to salt corrosion, making them ideal for coastal applications. Binders extracted from fish bones act as biodegradable adhesives, and when combined with powdered oyster shells, they form cohesive, strong tiles. This blend increases durability and longevity while ensuring environmental friendliness and biodegradability.
The texture and colour of ECOSHELL tiles can be customised to specific building needs. They resemble concrete but are significantly lighter, making installation easier and reducing structural loads. A user-friendly hanging system simplifies installation, maintenance, and replacement. ECOSHELL exemplifies sustainability, innovation, and social responsibility. It addresses global challenges related to discarded oyster shells and demonstrates a commitment to the environment, while reflecting practical applications of sustainability principles.
