The seamless integration of imaging technologies into the operating theatre is important so that surgeons can use the images easily and efficiently during the procedure. Staff shortages in the healthcare sector on the one hand and compliance with very high hygiene standards on the other are challenges that must be taken into account when developing new medical devices. With the CIARTIC Move, a new category of self-propelled mobile 3D C-arms has been created that facilitates work in the operating theatre by automating intraoperative imaging processes. With CIARTIC Move, surgeons can operate the system completely by themselves for the first time – from inside the sterile field. The system, which was tested in a preclinical study and has a fully motorised chassis, can be operated wirelessly. This allows trained surgeons to continue working even when dedicated intraoperative imaging experts are unavailable. The ability to store the optimal positioning of the device once found for image capture contributes to an improved user experience, as do a smaller footprint, a touch-sense handle and holonomic wheels for smooth movement. In terms of design, the CIARTIC Move communicates its technological advancement and reduced product complexity through a clear and dynamic surface treatment – the result of a consistent application of the manufacturer’s “Human Simplicity” design philosophy. Comprehensive cleanability is also ensured by the application of hygienic design principles. Deliberately designed parting lines organise the housing into defined parts that can be removed and exchanged easily for cleaning and serviceability. “As a self-propelled mobile C-arm, the CIARTIC Move represents a paradigm shift in intraoperative imaging with its revolutionary concept and advanced technology,” praised the jury. Moreover, the integration of a holistic user interface and a new operating concept increase the efficiency of intraoperative imaging and result in a system that impresses with a high quality of use.
