Over the last two decades, Blackmagic Design has made a name for itself worldwide with its approach to developing film equipment that is outstanding in terms of technology, ergonomics and design – and at the same time affordable. The Blackmagic Studio Camera 6K Pro achieves this feat once again. The camera was specially developed for live broadcasts and also optimised in form factor with regard to the ergonomic, functional and content requirements of such productions. In addition to a 6K sensor, the camera features motorised ND filters to cope with variable lighting conditions and an EF lens mount that allows the use of affordable photo lenses. However, the most important new feature over its 4K predecessor is the built-in live-streaming hardware, which allows the Blackmagic Studio Camera 6K Pro to be controlled remotely from anywhere in the world. Via the integrated Ethernet connection or a mobile phone connected to the USB-C port, live footage can be streamed in real time directly to the internet or to a studio. The fact that the camera remains in a manageable price range despite its outstanding technical features is due to careful rationalisation in terms of the mechanical construction, materials and production processes. The carbon fibre polycarbonate body of the studio camera consists of only three main parts. A central chassis provides a precise reference point to mount sensitive camera optics, critical components and sub-assemblies. The composite material used is 50 per cent lighter and cheaper than die-cast metal, but has comparable strength, rigidity and surface quality.
