With the sense of good communication design and creativity: the jury 2017 (part 4)
The heart of the Red Dot Award: Communication Design is the jury. With its expertise, it assesses thousands of submissions each year on the basis of established criteria. In 2017, there are 24 globally recognised experts who meet in Essen, Germany, to jointly decide in a multi-day process about the awarding of the coveted label “Red Dot”. Some of these experts are repeatedly part of the jury. Among others Uwe Melichar, Damon Aval, Gustavo Greco and Holger Windfuhr will select the winners of the Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2017.
Successful packaging designer
After Uwe Melichar had the classic start into the world of design with a communication design study, he started his career at the brand agency FACTOR at the age of 27. Four years later he became a partner and is ever since responsible for projects of major clients such as adidas, Bosch, C&A, Gardena, Omron or Phonak. In addition to his work as a communication and packaging designer, he is a lecturer at several universities. If he had the chance he would like to talk with the CEO of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, about his ideas on frustration-free packaging.
German communication talent
Damon Aval studied communication design at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences in Krefeld, Germany, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in 2011. For his thesis, a film about his alma mater, he was awarded the Red Dot: Junior Prize in 2012. Afterwards, he started his career as a junior art director at “Scholz & Friends” in Düsseldorf, moved to “Heimat” in Berlin and became a senior art director at “Jung von Matt / Spree”. In May 2015, he was appointed Senior Art Director at the newly founded agency “Antoni GmbH” in Berlin, which works exclusively for Mercedes-Benz. For him, it is an honour to be part of the Red Dot jury, because he feels connected to the award by his origin (Essen, Germany) and his awarding with the Red Dot: Junior Prize.
Brazilian design power
Gustavo Greco is the founder and creative director of "New Greco". He is a professor for the Postgraduate course in Brand Management at the "PUC Minas" and chairman of the "Brazilian Association of Design Companies (ABEDESIGN)". Gustavo Greco has received numerous awards, including the Cannes Lions, the D & AD Awards, the Red Dot Design Award, the iF Design Award, the El Ojo de Iberoamérica, the London International Awards, the Bienal Iberoamericana de Diseño and the HOW International Design Awards. His favorite place is the Brazilian island of Fernando de Noronha. It takes his breath away with its naturalness.
Multinational showcase
Born and grown up in the United States, Holger Windfuhr studied psychology at the University of Michigan and graphic design at the “U5” in Munich, Germany. In 2010, he completed the Kellogg-WHU Executive MBA programme, which is based on a partnership between the US Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and the German WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management. He then began his career as a part of the founding team of the “Focus” magazine and then switched to the German edition of “Forbes”. After joining the digital consulting firm “The Media Machine” in New York, he joined the “Money” magazine of Time Inc. and then Conde Nast “House & Garden”. Back in Germany he redesigned “impulse” by Gruner + Jahr. From 2000-2016, he was the creative head of the “Wirtschaftswoche” business magazine and directed the visual aesthetics of the brand. Since 2017, Holger Windfuhr has been Art Director of the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” newspaper. In addition, he is a member of the “ADC” and has won numerous design awards. He likes most about his job that he learns something new every day.
