“Products for Generations”: Red Dot Design Museum presents studio exhibition on the occasion of 90 years of Philips Design
In 2015, Philips celebrates its 90 years of design history. In recognition of the continuously good design achievements, the Red Dot Design Museum Essen dedicates a separate studio exhibition to the company. From 24 September 2015, “Products for Generations: 90 Years of Philips Design” presents around 50 exhibits, which illustrate the current design understanding of the Dutch manufacturer.
Founded in 1891 in Eindhoven, Netherlands, Philips recognised early that design is a key element of entrepreneurial success: An own design department was founded in 1925 under the direction of Louis Kalff, which was continuously developed further and expanded in the following nine decades. The appreciation of a better handling of technological products is very important in the design work. Today, the products are characterised by a clear form language which offers the user a maximum of functionality in combination with an intuitive operationability.
“Products for Generations: 90 Years of Philips Design” presents about 40 exhibits, which received a prize in the Red Dot Award: Product Design 2015. Moreover, models of the “Philshave” from the last 20 years are on show: The shavers illustrate the product’s evolution and thus explain the ongoing power of innovation and design strength of Philips, which adds significantly to the success of the technology company.
The cross-section of products by Philips is presented in two areas: While items from the fields of household, consumer electronics, personal care, and life science are shown on the third floor, well-shaped and innovative lamps can be seen in the boiler tunnel on the second floor.
The Dutch company has been awarded a prize in the Red Dot Award 184 times since 1988. Furthermore, Philips Design Team was honoured as Red Dot: Design Team of the Year in 1988.
