Mountain biking in harsh conditions demands much from the participants and their equipment. Cyclists and their bikes must often cover routes of more than 500 km that go through extremely rough terrain. The innovative design concept of the Trabec bicycle helmet gives users the highest possible level of protection in such extreme situations. It is designed for both single tracks and fast downhill descents and its functional features were developed for just such conditions. A highly interesting aspect of the overall design is the nature of the helmet’s construction. It is made in a similar way to the human skeleton and mimics its adaptability and elasticity. The Trabec’s core is made of aramid fiber-reinforced EPS, making it very tough, but at the same time elastic and able to adapt to any situation. The surface of the most exposed areas is seamlessly overlapping, making the exterior shell of the Trabec helmet more durable and safer. Another point worth noting is that the design process for this helmet combines experience from a range of sporting disciplines to produce a new class of products. Unlike the traditional bike helmet, the Trabec does not just cover the top of the head. Instead, it covers more like a skateboard helmet, running lower on the mountain-biker’s head. The heat produced by such close contact is regulated by an aerodynamic ventilation system with 16 vents.

Statement by the Jury

The jury gave an award to the Trabec because it offers the cyclist completely new functional and ergonomic advantages thanks to its mimicry of the human anatomy. By combining the advantages of the cyclist’s helmet, which protects the top of the head, with the close fitting form of a skateboarder’s helmet, POC from Sweden have created an interdisciplinary coup. The Trabec offers the mountain biking sport the best possible protection and thus the highest level of enjoyment.
