The objective of the exhibition design of “The Age of Coal” for the coal-mixing plant at the Zollverein colliery in Essen, Germany, was to invite visitors to feel the power and dynamism of the produc-tion process. The original flow of the coal through the coal mixer and the venue itself provided the structure for the artistic rendition of the dramatic framework. From the coal-dust container to the steel ingot, all objects needed to be appropriately placed in respect to one another so as to generate an overall aesthetic arrangement.
