An Eye on the Time from Every Angle

The dial is one of the most important components of a mechanical watch. It not only has to display all information and make it easy to read, it also greatly influences the aesthetic appearance, the “face” of the watch. The Ressence TYPE 3 BB2 features an astonishing, highly unusual dial which makes it possible to read the watch from any angle. The indicators, hands and numerals create the illusion of being displayed directly on the glass. This projection effect is the result of flooding the narrow gap between the inner surface of the glass and the face of the dial with oil. As oil and glass react to refracted light in a similar way, the human eye temporarily loses its depth perception, and the dial appears to move closer. The upshot is an impression of extraordinary clarity and immediacy of the indicators. Another benefit of the oil-flooded watch is that all parts are constantly lubricated by oil and are thus exposed to less friction. This reduces the relative weight of the ball bearings and hence the effort required from the movement. The shape of the TYPE 3 BB2 can also be described as unusual. The gentle bulge of the sapphire glass on the front and back creates a harmonious unit with the matt black DLC-coated titanium case of the watch. It is entirely without corners or edges. This makes the watch comfortable to wear on the wrist but also a pleasure to hold in the hand. “The qualities that make the product so pleasing to the touch are absolutely remarkable,” was the jury’s verdict. “By resolutely deciding to do away with a crown and due to its rounded, beautifully proportioned shape, the TYPE 3 BB2 takes the design philosophy of Ressence a step further and provides a unique time display that is easy to read from any angle.” In order to ensure optimal readability in the dark, the engraved indicators are filled with luminous blue Super-LumiNova. Like other Ressence watches, this one also replaces traditional hands with the patented Ressence Orbital Convex System (ROCS) rotating discs. The result is a three-dimensional dial that is in constant motion. It changes continuously and allows for unique, intuitive reading of the time.
