PlayStation® VR2 Sense™ Controller Charging Station

Accessories for electronic devices such as charging stations are usually given little attention. They are supposed to do their job efficiently, in short: they have to work. The PlayStation VR2 Sense Controller Charging Station, which was specially developed for the PS VR2 Sense Controller, on the other hand, impressively demonstrates what can happen when such an accessory is given great attention in the design process. Taking the four qualities of good design as a yardstick – the quality of function, of use, of seduction and of responsibility – then it quickly becomes clear that this charging station combines at least three of these qualities. Thus, it not only works, but also convinces in use with its well thought-out handling: When charging, the controllers are held in a position where the grip openings are aligned, so users can slip their hands directly into the docked controllers and start using them immediately. Putting the controllers back on the charging station is equally quick and hassle-free – users simply place them directly on the charging station and release their grip to start the charging process. The USB ports for charging on the controllers and the charging contacts of the cradle are equipped with magnets that automatically pull the controllers into the right position. “Since the user’s hands are inside the PS VR2 Sense Cntrollers while playing, placing the controllers, as offered by this charging cradle, is particularly intuitive and comfortable,” said the jury. In terms of seduction quality, the charging cradle also convinces with a design that allows the tray to merge with the spherical controllers into a harmonious whole. The curved lines pick up on the soft curvature of the controllers and form the cradle in which they can be safely placed. “The colour scheme in black and white convincingly continues the design of the PlayStation VR2 Sense Controllers with the distinction between the white outer shell and black inner functional components moreover, this underlines the elegant, flowing form language of the shell,” said the jury.
