Cooking is an art in which everything depends on the correct timing: be it a dish that has to be ready “au point” at exactly the right time or pasta “al dente”, which when boiled for too long lose their firm-to-the-bite texture. Small timers are the classic standard kitchen accessory to achieve this. They ring a bell when the suggested cooking time is up. The Pie kitchen timer features a strikingly clear design with a highly surprising graphic dial and functionality. At first glance, the Pie looks like a small box which, when the top half of the unit is twisted, reveals an easy-to-read analogue dial. When the time is up, the dial retreats and is no longer visible. The Pie kitchen timer can be set for a timing period of up to one hour and features a durable clockwork mechanism inside, which requires no batteries. With its plain and self-explanatory functionality this timer embodies a highly reliable and even entertaining kitchen companion. The symbolism that the design of the timer relies on is an expression of wit and sophistication: the opening and closing movement of the dial is reminiscent of a cake being “eaten up” gradually as time passes. In the overall design concept, this aspect of closing also serves another important function, as it protects the dial from dirt when the timer is not in use. Thus the Pie 60-minute timer lends its product category a new aesthetics, turning it into a kitchen accessory which, with its form and function, makes everyday cooking a more pleasurable experience.

Statement by the Jury

The Pie kitchen timer by manufacturer Joseph Joseph lends a surprisingly new design expression to the exact timing of cooking and baking. The way in which this palm-sized mechanical timer virtually dissects time into small pieces of cake is reminiscent of a camera shutter’s opening and closing movement. The dial comes to the fore only when the timer is in use and slowly retreats with each minute that passes. Convincingly simple, surprising, and humorous.
