“Enduring, not ultimate form”: from “Industrieform” to Red Dot (1980 - 1997)
Mycelium & Design
This project seeks to learn from nature in order to create alternative materials in a more natural way. A new culture method is used to shorten the growth time of the materials, which will allow mass production in the future to be possible. The mycelium-inspired material achieved in this project is strong, light, easy to process, non-toxic, harmless, degradable, soundproof, waterproof, and flame-retardant. Furthermore, the results of an environmental hazard test show that the material qualifies as an organic ecological material.
Based on observations and research on mycelium, the natural characteristics of mycelium are introduced into the artificiality system, and a sustainable solution from the source of the material is achieved while ensuring functionality. To begin with, this mycelium-inspired material has been used to create household and packaging products. It is expected that in the future, the material can be grown on a wider range of substrates and will have more uses and applications.
