Museum of the Moving Image
The extensive collection of the Museum of the Moving Image in New York, which re-opened in 2011, is an exhibition of the film, television and digital media art forms and their history and technology. The concept for the renovation and extension of this unique museum is based on the interplay of the long history of moving images with innovative technologies and contemporary design. Visitors enter the building through a portal of semi-transparent mirrored glass decorated with the museum logo. The lobby has been designed with recesses and corners to provide wall space for image projections. The external façade continues this theme geometrically with a pattern of triangular metal plates.
Statement by the Jury
Film and architecture share common ground. The extension of the Museum of the Moving Image reflects this with its sequence of rooms, transitions, transparency and complexity.
