Mazu Pilgrimage

The goddess of seafarers and fisherman, Mazu, is one of the best-known deities in Taiwan and China. Every year, hundreds of thousands of people take part in a pilgrimage to honour the goddess. This animation expresses belief in prayer and in Mazu’s blessing. The motif of the Mazu pilgrimage is combined with a music box depicting the temple from which the procession sets out, with the goddess being carried on a palanquin. Instead of the usual, lurid colours of religious processions, the colours used in the animation are restricted to the natural hue of the wood to emphasise the sincerity of the film’s message.
