Mazda MX-5 RF
Since the early 1990s, the Mazda MX-5 has embodied a special kind of driving sensation as a roadster. As part of a reinterpretation, the visual element of the soft top was modified by substituting it for a design with a hardtop. The Mazda MX-5 RF is based on the proportions and lines of its predecessor and impresses with its balanced compactness. The task of integrating the new hardtop sensibly into the reduced car size led to a fascinating functionality, which in its choreography impressively resembles the folding and unfolding of origami art: with the three-piece roof closed, the car has the appearance of a sports coupé. When opened, the top sections of the hardtop disappear behind the seats in a process that takes only 13 seconds and which leaves the fastback pillars in place. The entire mechanism adds only a minimum of weight to this roadster and takes up virtually no boot space. With regard to flexibility and security, a number of details were taken upmarket, including the interior materials and cabin insulation. The MX-5 RF offers optimised steering and ride properties as well as impressive curve-hugging agility. It combines high power with an improved mileage range and lower emissions. The design of this new model thus achieves a perfect balance of all elements – guaranteeing a thrilling and exquisite driving pleasure in every season.
Statement by the Jury
At first glance, the Mazda MX-5 RF looks light, accurate and powerful, a feeling that is confirmed when driving it. Based on the proportions of the predecessor model, it was convincingly worked out to the last detail. The design manages to combine the refinement of a coupé with the fun of a roadster in an impressive manner. Everything is in perfect balance and is optimally harmonised with each other.
