Friendly Load Bearers

Industry 4.0, the fourth industrial revolution, has already become reality in many places. The term refers to the comprehensive digitalisation of industrial production and the intelligent networking of machines and processes using information and communication technologies. Autonomous robots that collaborate with humans play a key role here. This is the backdrop against which the autonomous mobile robots (AMR) from the German system-engineering company and leading robotics specialist KUKA have been created. The award-winning AMR platforms from the KMP series were conceived for the precise, safe and efficient transportation of heavy loads in the warehousing and logistics sectors. Developed for different loads and environments, the platform versions are fully automated thanks to autonomous navigation, and are omnidirectional due to their Mecanum wheels. This means freedom of movement for both the machine and its surroundings. The brightly coloured AMRs stand out above all on account of the uniform diamond-shaped chamfers on the corners. This not only creates a consistent and appealing aesthetic but also makes the robots safer, lighter and more compact. Safety was also a key aspect when designing the signal lights. Located on several sloping surfaces, they can be seen by operators from any angle. The rounded front and back on some versions further reduce the risk of injury. The AMRs’ core components are easy and straightforward to disassemble, making it possible for workers to maintain and fix them without having to go to the trouble of removing the top plate. This not least increases efficiency. The jury was wholly impressed by the design of these industrial robots: “With its KMP series, KUKA has achieved a powerful yet friendly industrial aesthetic that is perfectly integrated into a product which is above all efficient, durable and safe.”
