Festung Xperience

Back Download

The reopening of the Dresden Fortress in 2019 was accompanied by “Festung Xperience”, an innovative show based on the latest audiovisual technology to immerse visitors in a 360-degree spatial enactment consisting of 25 scenes. The show traces the history of the 16th-century bastion fortification through an audio drama with mixed media including motion, light and sound design. The diverse format enables visitors to submerge themselves into the history of the site and elicits the sensation of being amidst the historic events. The multimedia, multisensorial and largely immaterial scenography even transforms visitors into participants, for example by having them trigger sounds, which appear to come from real sound sources when visitors enter certain areas. The exhibition features no exhibits except for the 1,800 sqm fortress itself, which is preserved in its authenticity and comes to life through a three-dimensional storytelling, an emotional film score as well as space-filling projection mapping.

Statement by the Jury

This project is part of a new discipline in exhibition design, where history meets high-tech and gamification provides the link between experience and knowledge transfer. The multimedia “fireworks”, with which this project creates a vivid and highly immersive sense of past events in the Dresden Fortress, have been implemented to a very high standard with illustrations, films, animations and sounds that are consistently detailed and engaging.
