Ideally, packaging should clearly visualise the message of a product it represents, and that is why the BAUM cosmetics line takes a holistic approach to skincare, complemented by a differentiated sustainability concept that focuses on far-reaching efforts to preserve trees for the future. With this in mind, the company Shiseido participates in tree conservation activities, planting and growing trees in the Tohoku and Hokkaido regions of Japan. The packaging for BAUM therefore focuses on visualising this responsible attitude towards nature as well as the natural ingredients of the cosmetic products. The packaging design reflects the philosophy of “living in coexistence with trees”. It thus realises the idea that in a society oriented towards recycling and living in harmony with nature, design can help create a rich and fulfilling lifestyle by combining advanced technology with nature and people. Only recycled and further processed wood offcuts from furniture production are used for the packaging. The result is high-quality wood elements that are pleasing to the touch and each of which looks different, as the wood itself exhibits unique natural variations and depths of grain and colour. To further reduce the environmental impact, bio-based PET is used for the plastic bottles and recycled glass for the glass containers.
Statement by the Jury
Impressive about the packaging for the BAUM cosmetics line is the consistent implementation of the sustainable concept for wood as a natural material. Customers feel comfortable with the product and clearly sense the connection to nature. Due to the diversity of the wood, each of the recycling-based packagings is unique and projects a special value. What is outstanding here is that the aspect of the unpredictable has been consciously integrated into an industrial production process.
