Airport Interior
Baku Heydar Aliyev International Airport
The new 58,000-sqm terminal of the Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku is spread over two levels thereby making it possible to separate arriving and departing passengers. The aim was to create inviting, pleasant surroundings in contrast to conventional airports. This is why natural materials such as wood and natural stone were used for the interior design. They are highlighted by indirect, soft and warm lighting. The cocoon-like timber structures are particularly striking. They contain the waiting areas and reduce the vast proportions of the airport to more human dimensions.
Statement by the Jury
The design, which uses forms and materials that are unconventional when it comes to airports, creates a particular atmosphere of well-being.
