Given the hustle and bustle of modern life, the concept of slowing down has also gained traction in tourism. Located in the heart of the lowland plains of Chengdu in the Chinese province of Sichuan, the Angsana Chengdu Wenjiang offers travellers a place of rest. Architecture and interior decor create moments of stillness and repose thanks to the muted, clear and natural colours and shapes that have been used. Inspired by the historic construction methods of the region, traditional elements – such as the structure surrounding a central courtyard, overhanging, sloping roofs, green tiles and cob walls – characterise the appearance of the hotel. By using traditional and naturalistic building materials and techniques, the complex harmoniously blends in with its historic surroundings. The modern nature of the architecture comes to the fore in detailing that is fitting for the materials as well as the way in which individual materials are used and treated. Natural textures such as bamboo, wood, cotton and linen are also found in the hotel’s interior. They underscore simplicity and a return to nature, employing traditional craftsmanship to rediscover local history. The balanced combination of time-honoured characteristics with a modern design approach also impressed the jury members, who were further won over by the choice of materials. “The colours and the natural quality of all the materials are finely coordinated. The sophisticated use of materials and techniques gives the complex a sense of peace and privacy, while at the same time making it feel open and flooded with light.” The choice of original, regional materials and the use of local workers ensured a low-carbon, environmentally friendly construction process and furthermore benefited local employment. In this way, the Angsana Chengdu Wenjiang not only represents a successful symbiosis of traditional and contemporary elements but also contributes to sustainable development.
