Red Dot Award: Product Design

Red Dot Label

Raising the global visibility of award-winning design – information on licensing and licence applications

The Red Dot Label is an internationally recognised quality seal for excellent design. As a Red Dot Award winner, you can make targeted use of the Red Dot Label on product packaging, in brochures or online to communicate your design expertise, distinguish yourself from the competition and raise your international profile.

There are also sector-specific labels to highlight the award even more effectively. For example, manufacturers in the automotive or lighting industry can supplement the label with “Car Design” or “Lighting Design” to communicate excellence in their specific sectors. Exclusive labels are also available for outstanding achievements in the meta-categories of “Sustainable Design” and “Innovative Design”.

Not only does the Red Dot Label increase your product’s global visibility, it can also be used for targeted brand communication purposes. With the right licence, you can make optimal use of the label for your business – on product packaging, in advertising materials or at the POS. Discover the options available to you here.

Access to and use of the Red Dot Label

Award winners who want to use the Red Dot Label have to book a Winner Package, which includes a Basic licence. An upgrade to the Advanced licence entitles you to the flexible and fully comprehensive use of the Red Dot Label. An Advanced licence is automatically included in the Bold Winner Package, and this option offers you the best value for money.

The booking options available to you and your eligibility to use one of the labels depend whether you have been awarded a “Red Dot” or “Red Dot: Best of the Best”. You can view all the details in your My Red Dot account from April 2025 onwards.

Use of the Red Dot Label in your online shop is associated with practical benefits for you. Even with just a Basic licence, it makes your product immediately recognisable as a design award winner.

Good to know: The Winner Package offers award winners a range of benefits, in addition to the use of the label. You can find out more here.

What is the Winner Package?

It includes effective measures to put your award-winning product and your brand in the spotlight – online, in the Red Dot Yearbook and at international exhibitions.

You also receive a certificate as official confirmation of your award and the right to use the prestigious Red Dot Label.

Two Winner Package versions are available: “Regular” and “Bold”, each offering different services. You can book these until 11 April 2025 and supplement them with optional add-ons. When you have made your booking and received confirmation of payment, you can immediately start using the Red Dot Label to communicate your success.

Do I have to book a Winner Package?

Booking a Winner Package is obligatory for winners in the Red Dot Award: Product Design.

When you submit an entry for the Red Dot Design Award, you agree in advance to book a mandatory Winner Package in the event that you win an award.

When can I start using the Red Dot Label?

The Red Dot Label is immediately available for use once you have booked your Winner Package. The booking is deemed to have been made as soon as you receive an email confirming your payment.

General questions about licensing

Which licence do I need for my company?

The right licence for you depends on how and where you want to use the Red Dot Label.

  • Basic licence: Use in corporate communications, marketing materials and digital channels
  • Advanced licence: Use on product packaging, at the POS and in external sales channels, as well as in conjunction with other brands

If you are unsure which licence is right for you, please contact us for personalised advice by email at label(at)red-dot.de.

Can I use both licences at the same time?

Yes, if you initially book the Basic licence and decide you want to use the Red Dot Label more extensively, you can always upgrade to the Advanced licence.

How long is the licence valid for?

Both licences are valid worldwide and for the entire life cycle of the award-winning product. Annual renewal is not necessary.

How do I apply for a licence and how long does it take?

The licence is included in your Winner Package. If you have booked a Regular package and would like to upgrade to the Advanced licence, you can do this in your My Red Dot account. You get the best deal on the Advanced licence if you book the Bold Winner Package.

Once the licence fee has been received, use of the label is generally approved within a few working days.

Do I have to pay the licence fee annually or is it a one-off payment?

The licence fee is a one-off payment, and the licence is valid for the entire life cycle of the award-winning product.

What labels are there?

Each award has its own label. Depending on the award you win, you will either receive the Red Dot Winner Label or the Red Dot: Best of the Best Winner Label.

In addition to these two classic labels, there are individual labels for specific sectors to highlight the award even more effectively. Companies in the automotive or lighting sector can communicate their excellence with the supplementary “Car Design” or “Lighting Design” labels.

Additional labels are also available for “Sustainable Design” and “Innovative Design” meta-category award winners.

To use the labels, you need one of the two licences (Basic or Advanced).

Can the Red Dot Label be used in a modified form, e.g. in other colours or with additional design elements?

No, the Red Dot Label can only be used in the specified form and colour. To ensure uniform branding, customisation is not permitted. If you have any questions about how best to integrate the label into your design, take a look at the design manual. It contains all the important specifications and guidelines.
