Red Dot Design Ranking on the occasion of the IMM Cologne: The most successful seating furniture manufacturers
Several thousands of current products are assessed every year as part of the Red Dot Award. The competition, which has been tracking down the best designs for 60 years now, traditionally receives a particularly large number of entries in the “Living rooms” and “Interior design” categories. On the occasion of the largest German interiors show, IMM Cologne, the Red Dot Award: Product Design is publishing an industry-specific ranking that provides information on the most successful seating furniture manufacturers.
The diversity of comparison in the Red Dot Award is reflected in virtually all product industries. In 2014, the competition received 4,815 entries from 53 countries for the Product Design discipline, with products ranging from new types of paper clips to innovative bucket excavators. A lot of knowledge has also been accumulated in the area of seating furniture. In the past five years, Red Dot has seen hundreds of chairs, stools, armchairs, cantilever chairs and sofas for all types of lives and lifestyles, which were entered in the competition for the sought-after award by designers and manufacturers.
The results of the expert jury, comprising reputable industrial designers such as Stefan Diez and Danny Venlet, provide in-depth insights into the industry: In the period between 2010 and 2014, a total of around 90 manufacturers won an award for seating furniture. As each manufacturer is allowed to submit several entries, the total number of awards amounts to more than 125 during the comparative period. The highest percentage of awards was won by German furniture brand Walter Knoll, putting the company in 1st place in the Red Dot Design Ranking.
The most successful seating furniture manufacturers since 2010 are: Walter Knoll, Intertime, Tonon & C., Bernhardt Design, Arper and Gaber. These six industry players have achieved the top positions in the Red Dot Design Ranking because of winning several awards for good and innovative design. Prof. Dr. Peter Zec, founder and president of the Red Dot Award: “The furniture industry has been struggling in recent years – but the focus on quality, continuity, originality and the communication of these values is achieving significant success in this important sector even today. In principle, innovative companies with a focus on design develop better and more profitably on the market.”
