Red Dot Award: Design Concept 2015 - major honour for best concept designers in Singapore
On 25 September 2015, the best design concepts and prototypes were honoured in Singapore. On a specially created runway in the Red Dot Design Museum Singapore, the winners received their deserved awards by Professor Dr Peter Zec, founder and CEO of Red Dot, and Ken Koo, President of Red Dot Asia.
In 2015, a total of 344 winning concepts emerged from 31 categories with 4,680 entries from 61 countries. 228 concepts were distinguished by the international expert jury with the sought-after seal of quality, “Red Dot”. 40 concepts were honoured with the top prize in the competition for ground-breaking design, the Red Dot: Best of the Best. 69 concepts were credited with an Honourable Mention for their excellent detail solutions.
“Every submitted design concept, prototype or about-to-be-produced concept, is subject to the same level of jury scrutiny, with the name of each entrant masked during adjudication”, describes Ken Koo. “The adventure of discovery is a constant in this design award; within the production line, just behind the scenes, technological advances have enabled new possibilities. Companies and studios have also found a place at this award to have their latest research assessed, leveraging on the expertise of the Red Dot jury to put the concepts through rigorous examination and evaluation.”
The jury has nominated unprecedented five concepts out of the 40 Red Dot: Best of the Best laureates for the Red Dot: Luminary - the highest distinction of the competition. The five nominees were “Boostrac” by Hankooktire Co Ltd; “FORTIS Human Powered Exoskeleton” by ROBRADY design; “OXYGENE” by Dalian Nationalities University; “Save3” by Aditi Singh & Parag Anand; and “Here - lamp desk” by serge Atallah.
This year’s Red Dot: Luminary was awarded to a concept which adapts to the effects of global warming: desertification. “Boostrac”, a tire which provides optimal dry performance in general and desert driving conditions, emerged as the top design of the year. “This tire is a conceptual project that, with a certain level of technical expertise, demonstrates new possibilities that design could achieve”, acknowledged Red Dot juror Patrick Chia.
The Red Dot: Luminary trophy was presented to Hankooktire Co Ltd. by Professor Dr Peter Zec, founder and CEO of Red Dot. Ken Koo concluded the ceremony with the presentation of “Exhibition: Future” at the Red Dot Design Museum Singapore, as well as the Red Dot Design Yearbook 2015. All winning concepts are also featured in the online presentation.
Representatives from the official design software partner, Autodesk, were present to congratulate the winning designers. On occasion of the ceremony, Pico Art International, the official event partner, transformed the Red Dot Design Museum Singapore into a red carpeted runway.
