Creative exchange: communication design exhibition opened in front of a full audience

At the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen, Germany, the evening of 22 February 2018 was under the motto of creative exchange. In front of a full audience, the opening of the new exhibition of Red Dot awarded communication design took place. “Creative Exchange: World’s Best Communication Design and Highlights from NRW” presents a selection of the latest top-achievements of the international creative industry until 3 June. The focus is set on achievements from North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), the home of the Red Dot Design Museum. All exhibits were granted a distinction in the Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2017.

Red Dot CEO welcomed the guests
More than 130 guests were there to get an insight into the state-of-the-art of international communication design. They were welcomed by Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of the Red Dot Award who thanked the guests for coming. In the center piece of the Red Dot Design Museum, the so-called Stoker’s Station, the attendants listened to his introduction: “We have curated a beautiful exhibition: the best works of the competition 2017 together with the award-winning works from a strong area in Germany, the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW). You will be able to convince yourself of the fact that this is really the crème de la crème of communication design.”

Persuasive achievements from North Rhine-Westphalia

In 2017, designers, agencies and manufacturers entered more than 8,000 projects in the Red Dot Award: Communication Design. “72 works from North Rhine-Westphalia received a distinction in that year”, explained Peter Zec. “Nine per cent of all awarded works are thus coming from NRW. That is a really good job.” Moreover, the design expert explained the awarding of the Red Dot and introduced the evaluation process, during which an international jury assesses the competition entries over several days.

International competition
In his welcome address, Professor Zec furthermore talked about the increasing internationalisation of the competition and emphasised the qualitative growth of the Asian market with countries like China, Taiwan and Korea, which are very strong in communication design: “This is especially because graphics has a long tradition in Asia.” Entries from the USA also increased notably.

The Red Dot CEO also stressed the good performances in the fields of packaging design, print and advertising as well as the fact that numerous companies are recognising that communication design is important to be successful in the long-term. Finally, Peter Zec declared the exhibition open: “Enjoy the evening, have a look at the great works, have good, interesting and inspiring conversations!”

Awardees attended the vernissage
During the subsequent visit of the exhibition in the “White Hall” of the house, the guests had the possibility to devote themselves to the around 140 exhibits in detail. Besides online projects, advertising spots, posters and packaging designs, they also experienced award-winning communication design at the fingertips, because touching some of the exhibits, such as annual reports and books, is allowed in the Red Dot Design Museum.

The audience of the exhibition opening also included laureates, among others representatives of Deutscher Katholikentag and Kopfkunst, Cölner Hofbräu P.Josef Früh, Innogy and zinnobergrün. They were pleased with the presentation of their works in the Red Dot Design Museum and used the event to let themselves be inspired and exchange opinions about the latest developments in the industry.

Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2018
Next year again, Red Dot awarded projects will be showcased in exhibitions. All those who convince the jury of the Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2018 have the opportunity to have their works presented before a broad audience in one of these presentations. From 5 March onwards, agencies, designers and companies from around the world can enter their communication design projects in the competition.
