Yangshuo Sugar House

뒤로 다운로드

Yangshuo Sugar House is an extraordinary hotel near the southern Chinese city of Guilin. The hotel combines the converted historic fabric of a disused sugar mill from the Cultural Revolution era with contemporary post-industrial architecture to create an extraordinary luxury resort of fantastic proportions. Modern concrete contrasts with the weathered brickwork of the former industrial buildings, forming a light and airy design with perforated, umbrella-like structures. The publication about the hotel documents the history of the building and includes information on the owners and designers, images from before and after the renovations as well as a presentation of the hotel. The slipcase of the all-black exterior publication is perforated with vertically punched stripes in reference to the building’s hollowed-out facade and bears the name “Yangshuo Sugar House”, produced using a hollowing process, in Chinese characters on the spine. Through the use of various design and printing techniques, the elaborately designed and realised publication thus is an expression of both the history and the current architectural design of the hotel.

심사평

This publication is an excellent example of how a differentiated design can authentically express the essence of its subject. From the colour scheme in noble anthracite, to the choice of paper, to the die-cuts on the slipcase reflecting the hotel’s facade with its characteristic perforated walls of hollow bricks and exposed concrete, it represents a highly aesthetic documentation.
