MKO Season 10/11
For the 2010/2011 season of the Münchener Kammerorchester (Munich Chamber Orchestra), the design task was to create programme brochures, posters and other promotional material under the season’s theme of “Architecture”. The design specifications included the creation of a non-representational design aesthetic appropriate to the topic. The implementation visualises various elements that play with the concepts of sound, space and light in order to achieve an array of highly differentiated results and effects. The resulting season appearance thus is easily recognisable and yet leaves leeway for variations when adapting it to individual applications. The twenty seasonal motifs were created by taking photographs of abstract, handmade objects and changing the colour and light atmosphere of the photographs through technical processes, such as flash lighting, inversion and digital colour processing.
Statement by the jury
»This visual appearance is remarkable because it does not rely on classical representations of music, but instead uses an imagery composed of abstract rhythms, three-dimensional surfaces and light/shade effects. Furthermore, the communication takes place on a parallel basis, via a superimposed clear typographic language. The design thus is able to play with colours and motifs that never resemble themselves, and thereby to differentiate the Münchener Kammerorchester from competitors in the culture scene.«
