Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2016 – the jury continues to grow
FLIR Tether Solutions
FLIR-TS tracking devices improve the safety and efficiency of currently time-consuming, labour-intensive, and error-prone lashing operations on cargo ships. Improper lashing causes 20% of accidents due to the lack of feedback on the mounting, monitoring, and maintenance of the securing gear. Through an adaptable clamping system, each FLIR-TS unit permanently attaches to mechanical securing gear of various sizes. Direct contact allows embedded strain gauge sensors to measure the lashing’s required tension continuously by monitoring deformation.
The objective system provides instant LED feedback to ensure correct tightening during loading in ports, along with remote monitoring and predictive environmental analysis at sea. This physical and digital bundle empowers the crew to take precautions and act immediately on alerts in the event of loosening, as well as follow regular maintenance schedules and gain detailed insights.
FLIR-TS reimagines manual workflows, frees up capacities, and minimises reliance on subjective inspections. By turning this previously invisible aspect of cargo safety into precise, reliable, and actionable real-time data, these devices help to simplify and standardise critical measures to effectively prevent container accidents.
