Bike-Table

China is known as the Kingdom of Bicycles. Yet, an astonishing number of abandoned bicycles flood the streets. This problem has been more prominent recently, due to the massive bicycle-sharing industry. Bike-Table takes inspiration from Chinese ‘urban villages’ where wasting precious resources is frowned upon and recycling is highly valued. Bike-Table was primarily designed for UABB Café, located in a Shenzhen urban village. Abandoned bicycles are recycled and turned into mobile tables. Bike-Table is made by village craftsmen with existing technology. Each Bike-Table is made using steel frames and foldable steel handles, and can be easily disassembled for packing and shipping. The original bicycle wheels and brakes are retained as table supports and stabilisation. Bike-Table is highly mobile for both indoor and outdoor events. The tables can also be set-up in creative arrangements, adapting to different occasions and spaces, such as street markets. To complete the look, the surface of each Bike-Table is made of mosaic tiles that match the colour of the recycled bicycle. This old-school mosaic tile was once commonly used in urban villages. By using this nostalgic material in an innovative way, Bike-Table hopes to elevate the urban village aesthetic as well as bring the outside world closer to the villagers and their cultural roots.
