“World’s Best Communication Design and Highlights from NRW”: successful exhibition opening
On the evening of 5 April 2017, the opening of the exhibition “World’s Best Communication Design and Highlights from NRW” took place in the Red Dot Design Museum Essen in Germany. It presents the latest trends, strategies and projects of the regional and international communication design scene. The spectrum of more than 100 exhibits ranges from illustrations and posters to packaging, advertising campaigns and online presences.
“There is no quality without a comparative view”
More than 90 guests were there to get an insight into current Red Dot awarded creative achievements from the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia and around the world. They were welcomed by Vito Oražem, Executive Director of the Board. He opened his introductory words with a quote by Vilim Vasata (1930 – 2016), co-founder of the Dusseldorf-based agency TEAM, which later merged with BBDO, and Professor for communication design at the University of Essen: “There is no quality without a comparative view”. Oražem put this into relation with the evaluation process of the Red Dot Award: Communication Design, which honours works and projects of good design quality and creativity annually. In this context, he emphasised that communication design from the federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW)is well-positioned in international comparison. A total of five of the nine granted Red Dot: Grands Prix, the highest distinction, went to works from NRW.
Moreover, the Executive Director of the Board was pleased that the Red Dot Design Museum is showcasing a selection of the works awarded in the Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2016 in its new exhibition “World’s Best Communication Design and Highlights from NRW”. Last autumn, all winning projects have already been presented in the elaborately designed exhibition “Design on Stage” in Berlin for six hours only. Now, the designs which were bestowed with the Red Dot: Best of the Best and Red Dot: Grand Prix as well as award-winning designs from NRW will be presented to a broad public for more than six weeks.
Laureates were among the guests
Besides designers and people interested in design, numerous laureates were among the guests. They were pleased with the presentation of their works in the museum and used the event for professional exchange, among others representatives of Grey, KW43 Branddesign, Cheil Germany, element 79, heureka, thyssenkrupp, zinnobergruen and Havas.
Communication design at the fingertips
Subsequent to the welcome address, the guests visited the exhibition and had the opportunity to devote themselves to the exhibits in detail. Besides illustrations, poster campaigns and packaging, they were able to experience award-winning communication design at first hand: In contrast with other museums, touching and examining exhibits, such as annual reports or books, is explicitly allowed and requested in the Red Dot Design Museum. Moreover, digital communication projects from the field of “Film & Animation” are presented in a cinema lounge. Screens give the visitors an insight into very well-done game designs, interfaces, online presences and many more.
Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2017
All of the exhibited works were granted a distinction in the Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2016. For 25 years now, the competition has offered agencies, designers and companies from all over the world a platform for evaluating their design and creative achievements. An independent jury assesses each entry individually and awards the Red Dot seal only to works that win it over with good design quality and creativity. At the moment, the registration phase for the Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2017 is on. Participants can submit their works and projects in 18 categories to the international competition. The final deadline is 9 June 2017.
