Red Dot Award: Communication Design

"Senses of the Future" - Red Dot: Grand Prix 2017

“Senses of the Future”: outstanding exhibition design

The Red Dot Award: Communication Design takes place once a year. Designers, companies and agencies from all over the world have the opportunity to submit their works in the competition and to put their accomplishments to the test. Every year, only a few projects stand out in particular. They are awarded with the highest single distinction, the Red Dot: Grand Prix. In 2017, this prize was granted only five times, among others to Tokujin Yoshioka Design for the exhibition design “S.F_Senses of the Future”, which was designed on the occasion of LG’s 70th anniversary.

Senses of the Future

The large-scale light installation was presented during the Milan Design Week 2017. It aims at illustrating the relationship between man and nature, as well as expressing LG’s design philosophy. This is based on the idea that innovative technology should be oriented towards human experience.

This is demonstrated in the exhibition with an installation consisting of different light elements made from ultra-thin LG OLED products. It shows dynamically illuminated chairs as well as a wall that simulates sunlight. With this exhibition design, the company emphasises its technology-orientated future visions.

The creative minds behind the idea

LG is a world-wide leading technology group that has become a pioneer in developing innovative products and services that include consumer electronics and communications. Tokujin Yoshioka is active in the fields of design, contemporary arts and architecture. Many of his works are showcased in permanent and special exhibitions of renowned museums. These aim at transcending the human senses and are based on nature. “Good design doesn’t require much explanation. The act of creation cannot be fully understood and is therefore by definition a matter of mystery, and thus beautiful”, is the design philosophy behind the project.

The jury was fascinated by the design and explained the awarding of the competitions’ highest distinction: “This exhibition, instead of presenting concrete products, uses OLED technology in a highly poetic approach for creating an abstract room installation, which, with its pulsating lights and colour plays, has a strong emotional effect and leaves a deep impression on visitors. This makes the strengths of the technology impressively come to the fore in a minimalist yet imaginative environment. Overall, the entire installation is perfectly staged and executed.“
